In recent years, the American LGBT civil rights movement has secured several important legal rights and protections. Gay marriage is now legal in over 37 states and the District of Columbia, LGBT Americans can now serve openly in the U.S. armed forces, and federal hate crime laws have expanded to include sexual orientation and gender identity. Yet despite this progress, transgender Americans still face significant discrimination in their lives.
In 2014’s Kumu Hina, Emmy Award-winning filmmakers Dean Hamer and Joe Wilson explore transgender and cultural identity issues in Hawaii. The film revolves around a Native Hawaiian who is both a māhū, or transgender woman, and a respected kumu, or teacher, and who inspires a young girl to fulfill her dreams of leading her school’s all-male hula troupe.
